Chicago’s New Map keeps Asian Americans and immigrants together in 33rd Ward!

CHICAGO, IL — HANA Center celebrates the new map of Chicago’s 33rd Ward that keeps Asian Americans and immigrants together in the Albany Park neighborhood. HANA Center also applauds the Asian American community effort that creates Chicago’s first ever Asian American majority ward in Chinatown. On Monday, May 16, 2022, the Chicago City Council passed a redistricted legislative map of the city for the next decade.
“The new map keeping the Korean, Asian American, and immigrants together in the 33rd Ward is critical to the health of our community. Albany Park has served as a port of entry for Korean Americans in the Chicago area and established our footing to build our lives in the U.S. HANA Center and its senior housing MooGoong Terrace and Koram Senior Housing have been established in Albany Park since 1972, and we are thrilled to be in the 33rd Ward together and to continue building our strong community,” said Inhe Choi, Executive Director of HANA Center. She added, “We are also grateful for the leadership of our 33rd Ward Alderwoman Rossana Rodriguez who fought fearlessly in this redistricting process for immigrant and BIPOC communities in our own ward as well as the rest of the city!”
“We did our best to draw a new map that reflects the growth of the Latine community in Chicago. I am grateful that the ward I represent, the 33rd Ward, will be a majority multi-ethnic immigrant ward. It is critical that currently marginalized communities will have greater opportunities to have a voice and power to bring changes that can uplift their lives. I also commend the leadership of the HANA Center that fought hard for this new 33rd Ward map and their on-going critical social services and powerful organizing work,” stated 33rd Ward Alderwoman Rossana Rodriguez.
Redistricting is a process that happens every 10 years to reassess the legislative map to ensure fair representation based on any changes in the population counted in the U.S. Census. As a result of the 2020 U.S. Census, the City of Chicago will have a new map that provides greater representation for Asian Americans. While Asian Americans can celebrate, HANA Center also recognizes that there were compromises that have been made by Latine, Black, and other marginalized communities. As we look ahead to the next decade, we pledge to continue building our community power to achieve fair representation and structural changes that the people of Chicago need to advance racial, economic, and social justice.
HANA Center worked with Asian Americans Advancing Justice Chicago, Alliance for Filipino Immigration Reform and Empowerment (AFIRE), and Cambodian Association of Illinois on the redistricting efforts.

새로운 시카고 선거구 개정안으로 33번 선거구의 아시아계 미국인과 이민자들이 함께 할 수 있게 되었습니다.
2022년 5월 16일 월요일, 시카고 시의회에서 향후 10년을 위한 시카고시 선거구 구획 개정안이 통과되었습니다. 하나센터는 시카고시 33번 선거 구역인 알바니 파크 지역의 아시아인 이민자들이 함께 포함되면서 된 개정된 선거구 구획 개정안을 기쁜 마음으로 축하합니다. 또한, 시카고 차이나타운에 시카고 최초로 아시아계 미국인이 다수가 되는 선거 구역이 확정됨에 따라 이를 가능케 한 아시아계 미국인 커뮤니티의 노력에 박수를 보냅니다.
“개정된 33번 선거구 구획안은 우리 지역의 한인, 아시아계 미국인, 그리고 이민자 사회의 건강에 큰 영향을 끼칩니다. 예로부터 알바니 파크 동네는 시카고 한인들이 미국에서의 삶을 위한 첫 발걸음을 떼는 입항지의 역할을 해 왔습니다. 1972년부터 시카고 지역 한인 시니어들의 삶과 같이해 온 하나센터의 무궁 테라스와 코람 시니어 주거 시설 또한 33번 선거구에 포함되어 있고, 계속해서 지역 커뮤니티와의 유대관계를 쌓아 갈 수 있게 되어서 너무 다행입니다.” 하나센터의 최인혜 사무총장이 감격스러운 소감을 전했습니다. “시카고시의 다른 구역뿐만 아니라 이민자 및 소수인종 커뮤니티를 위해 선거구 구획 과정에서 우리 커뮤니티의 목소리를 대변해 준 33번 구 로사나 로드리게즈 시의원의 리더십에도 감사드립니다.”
“시카고의 라틴계 커뮤니티의 성장을 반영하는 새로운 선거구 구획을 위해 최선을 다함과 동시에, 제가 대표하는 33번 선거구가 다민족 이민자 사회로 이루어지게 되어서 너무 감사합니다. 따라서, 소외된 커뮤니티도 빛을 볼 수 있는 기회가 주어지고 그들의 삶이 나아질 수 있는 변화를 가져올 수 있습니다. 이러한 과정에서 큰 힘이 된 하나센터의 주요 사회복지 서비스와 정책 옹호 활동들에 대해 큰 박수를 보내고 싶습니다.” 33번 선거구 로사나 로드리게즈 시의원이 덧붙였습니다.
선거구 구획 개정은 인구 통계에 집계된 인구 변화를 바탕으로 공정한 비례 대표제를 위해 입법 지도를 10년마다 재조정하는 과정입니다. 2020년 인구 조사 결과, 시카고시 내 아시아계 미국인들을 올바로 대변할 수 있는 새로운 구획 개정이 확정되었었습니다. 본 결과에 따라, 아시아계 미국인들이 축하의 목소리를 냄과 동시에, 하나센터는 이 과정이 라틴계, 흑인, 그리고 다른 소외된 공동체의 타협 속에서 만들어진 결과라는 것을 인지하고 있습니다. 향후 10년을 바라보면서, 시카고 시민들이 인종, 경제, 사회적 정의를 신장시키기 위해 필요한 공정한 대표성과 구조적인 변화를 위해 계속해서 노력할 것을 다시 한번 다짐합니다.
