Letter from HANA’s Board Chair
Dear friends,
I write to inform you that after seven incredible years of dedicated service, Inhe Choi will be stepping down as Executive Director of HANA Center at the end of the year. It is with immense gratitude to Inhe’s steadfast leadership that we, the Board of Directors, fully support her succession plan.
For those who have worked with Inhe, you know that she is a powerful force - one that guided the creation of the HANA Center through a strategic merger and grew the organization from there. Before HANA, Korean Americans were served social services through one organization and advocated for social change policies in another. HANA, which means “one” in Korean, is the recognition that the division between services and advocacy is arbitrary and that we could be more powerful when those functions could be brought together. Inhe was an early visionary of this - and she was its most important advocate and implementer.
Today, HANA Center serves over 16,000 annually through our immigrant and legal services, community education, housing services, workforce empowerment programs, and senior services. With our coalition allies, we’re making Chicago and Illinois a better place for immigrants, people of color, low-income people, parents, young & older people, women, queers, and more. We won the Welcoming City Ordinance and the Trust Act to keep ICE out of our city and state! We won historical systemic changes like healthcare for undocumented immigrants, in-state scholarships for undocumented students, and one driver's license for all so undocumented immigrants will no longer be left vulnerable with a different color license. We also won the TEAACH Act to have all IL K-12 public schools teach a unit of Asian American studies. Most recently, Inhe led the HANA Center in completing a strategic planning process that determines our direction over the next five years to prioritize growing grassroots community power; strengthening program alignment; and becoming a stronger and more sustainable organization.
We couldn’t have done these things without Inhe’s bold vision, her resilient and creative spirit, and her unrelenting commitment to seeing justice in our communities. Her contributions are innumerable, her impact immeasurable, and her legacy long-lasting. We will miss her contagious passion and love for the community.
We look forward to finding the next Executive Director of HANA Center who is committed to deliver on our strategic plan in alignment with our shared values. 동포 여러분께,
지난 7년여의 헌신적인 봉사를 마치고 최인혜 사무총장이 올 연말에 하나센터 사무총장직에서 이임할 것임을 알려드립니다. 이사회는 최 사무총장의 확고한 지도력에 깊은 감사를 드리며, 그의 행보를 전폭적으로 성원하는 바입니다.
최 인혜 사무총장과 함께 일한 사람들은 그가 전략적 합병을 통해 하나센터의 설립을 주도하고 조직을 탄탄하게 성장시킨 강력한 원동력이었다는 것을 잘 알고 있습니다. 하나센터 창설 이전에 한인들은 한 조직에서 복지 혜택을 제공받고, 다른 조직에서 사회 변화 정책을 추진했습니다. 우리 말로 하나를 뜻하는 하나센터는 복지혜택과 정책옹호의 구분이 모호하고, 그러한 기능들이 결합될 때 우리가 더 강해질 수 있다는 것을 인식했습니다. 최 사무총장은 이러한 인식의 선각자였으며, 가장 중요한 집행자이자 응원단장이었습니다.
지금의 하나센터는 이민 및 법률 상담, 지역사회 교육, 주거 서비스, 인력 강화 프로그램 및 노인 복지를 통해 연간 16,000명 이상에게 혜택을 제공하는 기관으로 성장했습니다. 동료 단체들과 연대하여 시카고와 일리노이를 이민자, 유색인종, 저소득층, 부모, 청장년층, 여성, 성소수자등을 위한 더 나은 곳으로 만드는데 성공했습니다. 이민세관집행국 (ICE)이 우리 도시와 주에 접근하지 못하도록 환영 도시 조례와 지역 경찰의 이민단속을 금지하는 신뢰법을 통과시켰습니다! 서류미비 이민자들을 위한 의료 혜택, 서류미비 학생들을 위한 일리노이내의 대학 장학금, 그리고 서류미비 이민자들을 다른 색상의 면허증으로 구분하지 않는 일원화된 운전면허증의 발급과 같은 역사적인 제도적 변화를 이뤄냈습니다. 또한 동양인 이민사 교육법 (티이취 법, TEAACH Act)을 통과시켜 모든 일리노이의 유치원에서 12학년까지의 공립학교가 아시안 아메리칸 역사를 가르치게 했습니다. 가장 최근, 최 사무총장은 하나센터의 향후 5년간의 방향을 설정하는 전략적 계획안의 수립을 주도했고, 풀뿌리 커뮤니티의 힘을 키우고, 프로그램의 정렬을 강화하며, 더 강하고 지속 가능한 조직이 되도록 이끌었습니다.
최 사무총장의 대담한 비전, 불굴의 창의성, 지역사회에서 정의를 구현하려는 끊임없는 헌신이 없었다면 우리는 이런 일들을 할 수 없었을 것입니다. 그의 기여는 셀 수 없이 많고, 그의 영향력은 측정할 수 없을 정도이며, 그의 유산은 오래 지속될 것입니다. 우리 모두는 다른 사람에게 전이시키는 그의 지역사회에 대한 열정과 사랑이 그리울 것입니다.
